I’m a big fan of self-care. BIG. FAN. Every week I share the tag #selfcaresaturday on Facebook and Twitter, telling people what my plans are for the day and asking, “What are you doing for you today?” Without fail someone will say that their day is too full or that they didn’t plan anything so it will have to wait.

Well, I’m here to be your excuse smasher! There is no reason that you can’t take some time for you—and I’ll show you how to do it.

What is self-care?

Well, according to the World Health Organization, “Self-Care is what people do for themselves to establish and maintain health, and to prevent and deal with illness.” To me self-care is anything that YOU DO FOR YOU. Not for your kids, not for your partner, not to make your mom happy—just for you. Sound good? Well, let’s go!

Six Quick Self-Care Ideas for Moms -postpartumprogress.com

1. Dance it out

The 30-second dance party is an idea that I stole from Shonda Rhimes. It is genius. Stop what you’re doing and put on an awesome song and just dance it out. You can set a timer for 30 seconds just to get a bolt of energy or you can boogie to the whole song.

2. Sing it Loud

I have a mini concert whenever I’m alone in the car. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Oh, I sometimes start off tired or grouchy, and there are plenty of times I’m down. The great thing about music is that there is something to match, or change any mood.

3. Treat Yourself

On your most stressful day, when you have to run from here to there and back again with screaming kids in the car and a million and one things to do, I want you to STOP and run into the grocery store for a mini Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Or an apple. Go to Starbucks. Or a juice bar. Go get a donut. Eat it in the car or anywhere you don’t have to share with anyone. Savor your coffee in silence for five minutes. Treat yourself!

4. Step Outside

Are you a stay at home or work at home mom who feels stuck in the house? Are you a working mom chained to your cubicle? BREAK FREE MAMAS! Let the kids watch TV for a moment, tell your co-workers you need a second and walk outside. Go outside, turn your face up to the sky, and just breathe. Just be there. Be in yourself. You spend so much time on everyone else; take this moment for you and the sky. *

5. Get Physical

Something on you is tight right now. Something hurts. You’re holding tension somewhere. Stand up and stretch it out. Get on all fours and arch your back, then release, arch, and release. Then give yourself a hug. Yes, I know it seems silly and awkward. Do it anyway. Trust me. *

6. Make a list, check it twice

There are so many more things that you can do to center yourself in your life. Only you know what would make you happiest. So write it down! I keep a running list of ideas on my phone. You can use whatever works for you. Up next on my list? Buy some bubble gum and blow bubbles for three minutes. [Read Also: Sprinkles of Self-Care.]
